Unveiling of The Letter People Mural
On Sunday, March
2 from 2-4pm we will
be having an unveiling of the Letter People
Mural in honor of READ
ACROSS AMERICA DAY which celebrates the birthday of Theodor Geisel
aka Dr. Seuss. the 2 wall murals depict all 26 letter people in Letter
People land. The mural is a picturesque walk along Main Street and
was created by Jaime Walton, a 19 year veteran at the Tot Spot, LLC.
Ms. Jaime started the work on the mural in August 2007. During the
unveiling, various members of the Tot Spot, LLC Staff will take turns
reading from the READ-TO-ME Letter People Library. Each book tells
something about the life of each Letter Person in Letter People Land.
The books also have storylines that emphasize character development.
Each book has a different character trait that is illustrated through
the life of the Letter Person – honesty, fairness, kindness, etc.
using the Letter People stories also honors Dr. Seuss' tradition
of writing stories with lots of alliteration and rhyming. The letter
People hold to a tradition of a phonics based program which enables
children to develop strategies to move from phonemes, the sounds
that letters make, to graphemes, which are the written representations
of those sounds. According to the experts, a child's first words
come from playing with sounds by repeating, gurgling, and babbling
sounds. The repetition of key sounds moves a child to associate sounds
with their respective graphemes. As children concentrate on words,
they begin with their ability to hear and mimic the sounds of the
letters, then they move on to use writing to create the graphemes
that represent those sounds.
The unveiling is open to the public
with a special invitation to any former Tot Spot, LLC participants
and their families who want to stroll down memory Lane and reminisce
about the LETTER PEOPLE and LETTER PEOPLE LAND.
